Practicing Baroque Flute - a musical approach to etudes and exercises
a Traverso Practice Net workshop
I'll show you some of my favorite exercises and studies on the baroque flute. Most importantly, I'll demonstrate how to practice with a musical approach and do away the common conception of studies as being monotonous and repetitive. Quite the contrary, they provide a great place to exercise creativity and foster an understanding of the musical language, in addition to developing technical proficiency.
I'll draw from both modern and historical resources such as Quantz, Hotteterre, Reichert, and others. In addition, I'll offer tips on embouchure, tone production, articulation, and finger technique from my years of experience. This is an interactive lecture-workshop which includes hands-on playing. Although the focus will be on the baroque flute, many of these concepts can be applied towards other instruments.

Music & Imagery - playing with a 3-dimensional sound
a Traverso Practice Net workshop
Music-making is often compared to storytelling, which combines words with imagery to create an emotional impact on the listener. Relating to my knowledge in portrait and fine-art photography, I'll demonstrate how such an extra-musical understanding can give insight into music and its interpretation. Furthermore, I'll demonstrate my concepts in tone production which will lead to a lively flute sound that has depth, richness, and flexibility in expression.
Using my own works ranging from portraiture to landscape astrophotography, I'm using these visual mediums to encourage and inspire players to be compelling storytellers with their expressive sound. Music-making thus becomes a fulfilling experience, both for the performer as well as for the listener. Let me show you how to take your playing to the next level!
